In partnership with Department of Industry’s (DTI) Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), the pinyapel was awarded by the UK-based Design & Art Direction Award for Environment and Sustainability. The said award-giving body “recognizes creative ideas that are driving positive change from around the world,” according to Nolisoli.ph

The discarded pineapple leaves, sourced from Bukidnon, are processed into sheets through a technology created by DCP. The sheets are then converted into “takeaway boxes, paper cups, paper bowls, and various food containers” by Ideatechs Packaging.

According to DTI-DCP, they have partnered with Cagayan de Oro Handmade Paper Crafts to launch a sustainable and innovative material by transforming waste into a useful material. The pinyapel was made to address and combat the growing problem of non-biodegradable plastic.

The award ceremony will be held in New York on November 6, Wednesday.

Thanks to the people behind the “pinyapel” paper cup, we have a better eco-friendly and sustainable alternative.
