Undersea Explorer Victor Vescovo dived 35,853 feet deep into the Mariana Trench—the deepest dive a human can make to date. He found out on that he was not the first one to make it that deep. He discovered a non-biodegradable and tangible plastic bag had beaten him.
Aside from the plastic bag, he also had footages of an Arrowtooth Eel, an Cusk Eel, and a Mariana Snailfish.
What if deep sea creatures have already eaten the plastics that fell down from the surface? And the plastic bag is what’s left? We’ll never know. It’s disappointing and sad at the same time but it’s our fault that plastic bag got there.
According to an article from MIT Technology Review, it was not the first time underwater explorers discovered plastic at the bottom of the sea. It’s already a reminder of the scale of the problem. "About 8 million tons of plastic are thrown into the ocean every year, mostly washed into the sea by rivers. There will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050 if current trends continue, according to the United Nations."
